Tracing colonial violence as a grammar that repeats across scale and century, Juni Mun works through sculpture, kinetic installation and drawing to summon the past into the present tense. She uses migration — her own, and the forced displacement carried in her maternal line — as a starting point for research into how identity is taken, renamed and reissued: from people to birds and plants, from forests to islands. Mun builds from domestic forms and their gestures — houses, tables, windows — making devices that implicate the viewer in an unease held over from the past. Her sculpture attempts to reverse the direction of that violence and rejoin what was broken, knowing the attempt is premised on failure, and repeating it regardless.
