Lost Name is an ongoing series about the naming that colonial and imperial expansion carried out — on birds, on plants, on places. It looks into extraction, (re)naming, and erasure.
Wings takes the greater bird-of-paradise. Skins reaching Europe from the Moluccas and the Aru Islands had been prepared by local hunters with the feet and wings removed, so that they would dry and travel. From these, Europeans concluded that the bird had no legs — that it stayed aloft on its plumes and touched the earth only in death. In 1758 Linnaeus made this official, naming it Paradisaea apoda, footless. Interesting thing is that the complete skins, feet and wings intact, arrived in Europe since the early 1600s.
Lost Name
