Kraak (porcelain) is the Chinese blue-and-white made for European export in the late Ming, roughly 1560 to 1640 — segmented floral panels, exotic motifs, shaped to Dutch taste. It was imitated afterwards in Japan, at Arita, partly by Korean potters carried off during the invasions of 1592–1598, and then in the Netherlands as Delftware. A form travels, is copied, and each copy is reclaimed.
The cup used in the work carries the Pagoda Riverscape pattern, one of the designs recovered from the Geldermalsen, wrecked in 1752 and sold by Christie's Amsterdam in 1986 as the Nanking Cargo. The pattern flattens Chinese landscape painting into something legible to a European eye, and became a model for chinoiserie across Europe.
